Why Study Abroad?

The year 2006 was celebrated as the “Year of Study Abroad.”  The United States Senate unanimously voted this designation in a resolution passed in late 2005.  Lawmakers called  for action by secondary schools, institutions of higher learning, businesses, and government programs to promote and expand study abroad opportunities.  They encouraged everyone to observe the Year of Study Abroad with appropriate ceremonies, programs, and other activities.  In short, federal leaders recognize that a 21st century education requires knowledge of people and countries beyond our local, state, and national borders.  In fact, international boarders in many areas of our lives are being erased; take, for example, the breakdown of borders resulting from the growth of multinational companies and of the telecommunications industry. Businesses buy from and sell to people all over the world, and we conveniently email and call people who live on the opposite side of the earth.  Even pollution and illness ignore boundaries between countries, and both are sources of issues that require attention in the international arena.  You cannot escape the fact that you live in a global society and, thus, are a world citizen.  In the next three or four years, what do you plan to include in your course of study to make yourself “world-ready”?  A good world citizen has an international perspective.  What experiences do you plan to have that will help you broaden your perspective? Study abroad! It is a great way to expand your point of view and experience.  Be proactive in shaping the rest of your life – professionally and personally.
